The Easy Chic of Harbour Island

American Way
Harbour Island is tiny, only half a mile wide and just over three miles long, but it attracts a cornucopia of boldface names, from Charlize Theron to jet-set figurehead Jean Pigozzi. Diane von Furstenberg has been on the island forever, along with such stalwarts as Brooke Shields, Régine, the model Helena Christensen and designers Trish Becker and Alessandra Branca. Musicians turn up at the nearby home of Dave Stewart, who co-founded the Eurythmics with Annie Lennox.

House of Turquoise
I’ve been antsy to share this absolutely delightful beach cottage with you guys! Chatterbox, a Harbour Island, Bahamas classic colonial designed by New York-based Trish Becker, was featured last summer in Coastal Living–photographed by Annie Schlechter and styled by Liz Strong. Located in the heart of Dunmore Town, the cottage was built in the late 1800’s and embodies old world Bahamian charm. The designer worked with de la Guardia Victoria Architects & Urbanists, Inc. and Owen Higgs Construction to restore the historic home to its original glory, filling the home with colors, patterns and textures perfect for a Carribiean getaway!

700 Islands
Located in the heart of historic Harbour Island, Jewelbox boasts the colonial architecture the island, and the Bahamas, are so often celebrated for. Lovingly restored from rubble, Trish Becker’s respect for the rich history of the home is on display in every corner and every room of this coastal cottage. Complete with modern comforts (whole home stereo, security cameras and wi-fi) the house, in Becker’s words, “is meant to please the senses of a dedicated island enthusiast, one who also appreciates being able to keep in touch with the off-island world.”

Coastal Living
There's nothing like a pink, down-on-its-luck cottage to turn Trish Becker's head. The New York–based jewelry designer and house rescuer (this was her first renovation of three) has a soft spot for old Bahamian colonials with a story, and this one—nicknamed Chatterbox—had plenty to say.

Cottage and Vine
I love a good before & after and this one is quite a transformation. This charming cottage located on Harbour Island had to be completely rebuilt. Old materials that were no longer sturdy enough to use in the structure of the house have been re-purposed in other ways – the picket fence, walkway, and platform bed. The unified color scheme (Touch of Grey by Devoe Paint) help the “flow” while the bright accent colors give each space energy. Shiplap walls paired with stained wooden window sashes strike the perfect balance. Thrift store and eBay finds add warmth and interest as well as giving nod to the history of the home.
